The Songbird Dreams of Singing
Project Type
dance performance, installation
Date
September 2023
Scientists have learned that songbirds rehearse melodies in their sleep. While sleeping, the songbirds’ brain waves produced the same activity compared to when they were awake and singing. Research suggests that a songbird can stockpile a song in their memory, then rehearse it later in their sleep. It is possible for humans to gain control and shape the circumstances of their dreams while in a lucid state. People with these abilities are often called dream walkers. Some say that having this ability can help to manifest change in the waking world, by planting an idea or desire as a seed in the subconscious. The Songbird Dreams of Singing features a large scale bird’s nest. The nest acts to reimagine the comfort of home, of the bed, and what happens in the dream realm. Take a moment to dream of more, to release yourself from restrictive mental process. We often hold ourselves back from our true potential. We need only open ourselves up to the possibilities.
It can be presented in two fashions, as a performance, and as an interactive space for viewers to inhabit while listening to audio. In a performance setting, the dancer exists in a liminal dream state, exploring and manifesting potential change and self-development. The solo is an ode to the power of dreams as a source of inspiration and manifestation. In an interactive setting, viewers are allowed to climb inside the nest, to find refuge in a bed unlike their own, and introduce a new element to the potential of their dreams. The nest asks us to imagine a home outside our familiar notion, to consider our likeness with the birds. In the new relationship potential, the idea of investment arises. Where do we do our dreaming? How do we treat the natural world, and why don't we treat it as extensions of our home? Take a moment to dream of more, to release yourself from restrictive mental process. We often hold ourselves back from our true potential. We need only open ourselves up to the possibilities.
