soft chaos
Soft Chaos is a contemporary dance movement class offered by Amara Barner, as well as a defining core concept of all her multidisciplinary work. Her work holds a softness, witnessed in the care of production, materiality, and presentation to audience that invites you to get close and further investigate in an inviting circumstance. Chaos is utilized as a symbolic messenger of change, an impetus to re-evaluate the known and unknown.
As a multidisciplinary artist, Amara relies heavily on her understanding of movement as a foundation for creation. Everything she creates is a choreography of intentional energy. The fibres of her physical being, and the fibres within the materials used, dance together in space. Her practice largely encapsulates introspections, dreams, and a yearning for fantasy escapism. As well as her personal relations to the natural world and its creatures. She is fascinated by controlled momentum and centrifugal force. The creation of spirals and the release of stored energy at controlled intervals. Exertions of physical power and the emotions that swell in response. Body language as a conversational tool as reliable as our speaking voice. By combining visual and performance art, she seeks to reveal intersections of commonality, dualities of humanity, and the magical wonders of natural life, through surreal environments that activate curiosity.
Class description
Soft Chaos is a guided somatic improvisation based movement practice inspired by the ancient Hindu chakra system. It begins with a body scan from Root to Crown in an upwards path of liberation. Throughout this process, we create rebellious energetic upheavals to release the old and make space for the new. In Soft Chaos, we allow disorder to open new potential pathways. Layering momentum with interruptions that redirect our body in space. We traverse the lengths of the room with enlivened spirits. We then travel downwards through the path of manifestation. Taking control of our decision making, agency, and the curating of our bodies in space and relation to others. The path of manifestation provides an opportunity to affect change and consciously inhabit the body. You will be encouraged to challenge the lengths of form, stamina, connection to self, presence. You decide your limitations. You free yourself.
In this practice, physiological activity is understood as freely passing or blocked energy within the body. Active awareness of bodily sensations in opposing and challenging circumstances is a pillar of my practice. For example, the head and feet in opposing directions of centrifugal force and momentum. The body’s centre of gravity acts as an extension or interruption of movement, with momentum as the driving force. The limbs (arms and legs) may act as reorienting forces to encompass whole-body awareness, control, precision.
